This weekend I have been working on the index for my forthcoming book Gun Curious. It’s the last major piece of work to do on the book (not counting proofreading).

Doing an index can be tedious, but it also allows you to think about both the substantive contributions of the work and also all those who have informed it.

Some people’s influence on my thinking is more in the DNA of the book than in any particular mention that would end up in the index. I recognize some of these people — especially beta readers and longtime supporters — in the book’s acknowledgments.

But I do name 155 people in the index and I will list them below because I do not know who will be cut from the index in the editing process (you won’t be cut from the book because the text is finalized!).

I know some of the people listed below better than others. Some I have never met in person. But looking at these names individually and collectively makes me realize how fortunate I am to have learned about guns and gun culture from a smart and diverse group of people.

The index, of course, doesn’t include all of the people whose work I cite in the book. I’ll post the bibliography separately soon.
