How to Follow My Work

Someone recently emailed me with a seemingly simple question: How do I follow your work? A short question with a long answer.

If you know of someone unfamiliar with my work, please share this post with them because I have literally flooded the field with avenues to keep up with my work/thinking. I list them below with a brief note explaining the purpose of each.

For the blogs, you can sign up to receive an email when I post. For the YouTube channel, you can subscribe and (separately) get notifications. The social media have the typical options to follow. I also use the crowdfunding platform Buy Me a Coffee to support my work, and will be spinning up my dormant email distribution list as I get closer to publishing my book on American gun culture next year. I do maintain a personal Facebook page but I try only to “friend” people there who I have some connection to in real life, sorry.

Gun Culture 2.0 Blog (gunculture2point0.com): This is where all my public thinking about guns started. Nearly 1,000 posts since 2012 covering all aspects of my journey through gun culture. I share ideas, experiences, and perspectives, but also let people know what I am and have been up to in terms of speaking and publishing.

Gun Culture 2.0 Facebook Page: In addition to cross-posting my GC2.0 blog posts, I also put up shorter thoughts here that don’t necessarily merit a blog post and sometimes ask followers questions related to my work or thinking to get feedback. Followers interact here quite a bit with me and each others.

Gun Curious Blog (guncurious.com): Realizing that most people who were engaging with my Gun Culture 2.0 blog were people already into guns, I started this blog in 2019 to try to reach the “gun curious” – those interested in but unsure about guns who were open-minded enough to want to learn more. Here I post things that should be of general interest like basic information about gun ownership and gun culture, reviews of books about guns, and materials from my Sociology of Guns seminar at Wake Forest University (these are especially popular).

Gun Curious Facebook Page: Like the GC2.0 Facebook Page, this is associated with my blog by the same name. I had hoped to engage the “gun curious” here, but to be honest, most of the 1,000 followers here seem to be gun people also, though I know some gun people who suggest the page to their gun curious friends. Would love to try to find a way to tap into an audience of people between the fully-committed on the pro-rights and pro-control sides.

Light Over Heat YouTube channel (lightoverheat.com): With blog readership experiencing a secular decline, in January 2022 I decided to try this new way to reach what I hope is my core audience: those more interested in bringing the light of understanding than the heat of disagreeableness to the issue of guns whether they be gun enthusiasts, skeptics, or curious. I try to put out one video a week that is around 5-7 minutes long on some issue or experience that I think can shed light on the issue of guns.

Twitter/X: I am on this social media platform for now, with both a personal page (@davidyamane) and a Gun Culture 2.0 page (@gunculture2pt0). I am trying to post more about my thinking and writing about guns on my personal page, but you’ll also have to endure occasional pictures of my cats or me drinking and the like there.

Instagram for Gun Culture 2.0: I’m much better at words than images, but I do maintain an Instagram page and post pictures related to what I’m up to there (instagram.com/gunculture2pt0).

Buy Me a Coffee: This crowdfunding platform allows people to support my research and writing about American gun culture through either small one-time donations or monthly/annual membership. I send occasional posts to these supporters giving them either advanced notice or insider information about what’s going on with my work, most recently the process of trying to get my book on American gun culture published.

Mailchimp Email Distribution List: This email list has existed for a long time, but I have only used it twice so far. But as I get closer to the publication of my long-awaited book on American gun culture, I intend to use the list more to keep people abreast of where the book project is at. So please sign up for some infrequent but important email messages from me (that will differ from what I post on my blogs and other social media). Click the link above or scan the QR code below.
