There is no type of firearm in common civilian use today and historically that has not seen service on the battlefield. Flintlock muskets were state of the art military equipment in their day and commonly owned by the civilian population. Thus the “weapons of war” theme being pushed by the anti-gun side is just another bogey man they invented in aid of their fear mongering..

David, could you go back to 1914 to see if there was a spike in military style ads during The Great War? On that note, looking at the WW II spike, perhaps the driver of increased militarism in advertising since the 1960’s could be that the United States has been in what Orwell might call “continuous war” so the opportunity to capitalize on the military’s use for these dang weapons of war in selling them to civilians is always present. Not to mention, the government’s advertising of militarism in order to whip up an all volunteer army, “Army of One”, etc.Your mention of Balco is on point.

On that note, I think I might exercise my venerable 1911 match pistol this weekend, eh?
