Like most newbies to Gun Culture 2.0, I mostly have guns for self-defense and, relatedly, mostly shoot handguns. I do have a Bushmaster XM-15 MOE that I bought when a friend worked at Remington (friends and family pricing!) and it seemed possible that I would not be able to buy an “assault rifle” in the future. Despite my friend David’s best efforts, I have never shot it.
But for some reasons I still think about building my own AR. I have no idea why. I had stopped thinking about it lately, but another friend — let’s just call him No Lawyers – Only Guns and Money John — sent me a link to a very hard to resist “builder set” from AeroPrecision.
The set contains an M4E1 Enhanced Upper Receiver, AR15 Gen 2 Lower Receiver, and a Gen 2 Enhanced M-LOK Handguard with Coast Guard insignia and markings.
Of course, I already have an AR-15 style rifle that I don’t use, but maybe if I built a Coast Guard themed rifle for my USCG veteran wife, I would be more likely to get out and use mine?
As Massad Ayoob once told me, the family that slays together, stays together. Something to think about.
Gun Culture 2.0 
I bought a Mini-14 from one of our post-docs when he moved to New York and did not want to take a chance on having Andrew Cuomo snag it. A buddy bought his SKS. I do shoot the Mini a few times a year. Its fun. One of these days I have to try an AR just to see the difference.

For AR’s, two is one, and one is none. So you really need three.

I have a Tula 1951 SKS and have one of the HMG STG-N’s on pre order. Decided to go that route because I wanted something different from all the AR/AK’s out there.
